MacKeeper is a multifaceted security and performance application developed for Macintosh computers. Its primary objective is to safeguard against cyber threats, enhance the system’s performance, and aid in recovering storage space. It is worth noting, however, that MacKeeper’s previous parent company has been implicated in questionable activities. Nonetheless, the application has been acquired by a different organization that has made considerable efforts to improve its standing in the industry.

 

 

MacKeeper is a comprehensive application that provides a range of valuable features, enabling users to ensure the security and optimal performance of their Macs through a singular platform. It is particularly beneficial for individuals seeking a simple, hands-off approach to security and maintenance. With MacKeeper, users can easily undertake most essential security and maintenance functions, thanks to its user-friendly setup and navigation.

Among its numerous features, MacKeeper provides continuous protection against viruses and malware, facilitates disk space reclamation, optimizes Mac performance, and simplifies the process of uninstalling unused programs. Additionally, the application incorporates a virtual private network (VPN) for enhanced privacy and security and includes popup ad and website tracker blocking functionality.

The MacKeeper software comprises several integrated features that are organized into four distinct categories, namely Security, Cleaning, Performance, and Privacy. Furthermore, there is a Premium Services component that is not an intrinsic aspect of the application but is, instead, a support service rendered by Clario, the software’s manufacturer.

The Security classification of MacKeeper consists of antivirus software and an adware cleaner. The antivirus component offers an impressive detection rate of 99.7%, as attested by AV-Test, which awarded it a perfect score of 6/6. In addition, the software is capable of blocking Mac-specific malware and can identify and remove viruses, spyware, adware, and ransomware. MacKeeper’s high-speed on-demand scanning capabilities are among the quickest available, and its real-time protection ensures that viruses are detected and prevented from infecting files before they can be accessed.

The adware cleaner feature monitors the user’s Mac continuously for malicious installers and scareware, providing instant notifications when such threats are detected. The user is then given the option to remove the identified malware.

MacKeeper can enhance the performance of slow or unresponsive applications, preventing freezing or crashes. The application’s automated memory monitoring system continually checks for updates and ensures that the latest versions of all apps are installed.

MacKeeper provides an additional feature for the removal of redundant files such as logs, cache files, and unused languages, resulting in a safe and efficient operation. The program locates duplicate files and employs MacKeeper’s Smart Uninstaller to ensure that all relevant files and associated data are deleted when an application, widget, or browser extension is removed.

In the realm of privacy, MacKeeper encompasses a suite of features that includes a VPN, ID Theft Guard, and StopAd. The application’s built-in VPN enables secure browsing of the internet, with the added benefit of encrypted data transmission and concealment of browsing history when using public WiFi networks.

MacKeeper’s Premium Services offers a professional support system that employs agents to optimize the speed and performance of your Mac while refining the system’s functionality. The service also encompasses 24/7 technical assistance, providing coverage for a variety of devices, including phones, tablets, printers, scanners, and cameras, to address any technological issues that may arise.

One of the key selling points of MacKeeper is its user-friendly interface, which streamlines the installation process and guides users through its main functions. The application boasts a clean and intuitive interface that is easy to navigate, and offers continuous guidance after initial scans have been performed.

ID Theft Guard, a feature of MacKeeper, requires users to input their email address. Once inputted, users will receive a detailed report indicating any compromised passwords and the source of the security breach.

MacKeeper’s main functions are prominently displayed in the left-hand menu, accompanied by numbered red badges that indicate any necessary actions. With a single click of a button, users are able to resolve issues found by the Adware Cleaner, Safe Cleanup, and Update Tracker features. It is important to note that Update Tracker may require a paid upgrade for certain updates.

During our testing, we observed that MacKeeper conducts antivirus scans with remarkable speed when compared to other antivirus programs for Mac. In comparison to popular alternatives such as McAfee and Kaspersky, MacKeeper’s scanning speed was more than four times faster. However, the comprehensiveness of a full scan varies depending on the product, and as such, it is possible that MacKeeper may not be performing as extensively as its competitors behind the scenes.

Furthermore, we noted that MacKeeper’s detection rate is comparable to other antivirus software we tested, although it may not detect rootkits as they are not part of the MacKeeper database.

MacKeeper provides a Premium Services support plan that can be subscribed to for either a 6-month period at $408 for 1 year or on a yearly basis, $696 per year.

While MacKeeper’s pricing used to be on the high end, it is now more in line with other Mac antivirus products. Although it offers a feature set similar to its competitors, it does not include certain tools such as protection against malicious URLs and an integrated firewall that are provided by some other products.

The Premium Services option is an attractive addition, but the cost is comparatively high when compared to other security companies that offer similar services, such as McAfee® Concierge Gold at $179.95/year.

MacKeeper offers several support channels to its users, including live chat, email, and phone support. Users can access the live chat option on the right-hand side of the interface, where they can receive assistance from support agents. In some cases, MacKeeper support agents may request users to install a separate Remote Support app to diagnose issues effectively.

While email and phone support are also available, the toll-free phone numbers are only displayed after users initiate a live chat or receive an email response from the MacKeeper team.

Our testing found the support to be inconsistent, with generic and unhelpful responses received via chat and email. Additionally, there were attempts to upsell Premium Services. However, phone support proved to be better, with faster response times and more direct answers to queries.

MacKeeper is an all-in-one application that offers a range of useful features and a user-friendly interface. Its ease of use is well-suited for those seeking a “set it and forget it” solution.

Nonetheless, there are more cost-effective options, particularly when considering the cost of the Premium Services. Additionally, MacKeeper does not offer certain vital features such as an integrated firewall. Furthermore, the overall support experience left much to be desired.
